The origin of this path is said to be Nara or Heian period. The name of the place originated from a poem by Narihira Zaihara about crossing the Utsunoya Valley in "Ise Monogatari". Nowadays, Tsuta-no-Hosomichi has been beautifully maintained as a hiking course and is crowded with many hikers.
